Ensign Francis Marion Ballard, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Ballard, l05 Grove Street, received his commission as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve on March 31, when he graduated from the Naval Training School for Fighter Director and Combat Operations, School of Radar, at St. Simons Island, GA.

Ensign Ballard spent 11 days leave here at home before leaving for Newport, RI, where he has been assigned to active duty with the Naval Fighter Director and Combat Operations.

Ensign Ballard is a graduate of the Eau Claire High School and attended Eau Claire State Teachers College for two and half years.

Flight Officer Norman Ballard, older son of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Ballard, received his appointment and wings from the Army Air Corps on December 5, 1943 at Valdosta, GA. He is now pilot on a B-17 and is forming his squadron at MacDill Field, Tampa, FL. He expects to be sent out to active duty soon. He was a student at the state teachers college before enlisting.

Flight Officer Norman E. Ballard, 22, son of E. R. Ballard, 105 Grove Street, Eau Claire, WI, recently completed Flying Fortress pilot training at this Army Air Forces school. He won his Army wings and appointment on December 5 at Moody Field, GA. The new four-engine bomber pilot was a student at Eau Claire State Teachers College before entering the service in July 1942. He was graduated in 1939 from Eau Claire High School.

Norman was a brother of "Bub" Ballard and a successful insurance man in Eau Claire for many years. He operated out of Sears Company much of the time. Their sister, Lorraine, married the son of Walter Pidgeon, the movie star.
