Gerald Burns

Private Gerald Burns arrived safely in North Africa recently, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Francis Burns, of Augusta.

He entered the service in May 1942. After taking his basic training at Camp Shelby, MS, he trained at a couple other training centers, the last being the Desert Training Center in California. In the course of training, he received two medals for marksmanship and a Good Conduct Award.

His two brothers are in service--one, Thomas, in England; the other, James, in Panama.

Private First Class Gerald Burns of Fairchild, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal and ribbon. This award is in addition to the Purple Heart, which he received last May. He is serving in Italy as a member of the Custer Division, a part of the 85th Army Division. This division earned much praise for their heroic action in taking Hill 69, the last stronghold before reaching Rome.
