|John L. Cowan Gets Promotion|
|WITH U.S. ARMY FORCES, in New Caledonia. John L.
Cowan, son of Mrs. Irene L. Cowan, 317 1/2 Earl Street, Eau Claire, WI,
has been promoted from Captain to Major, while serving as Administrative
Finance Officer at this South Pacific base.
A graduate of Dartmouth College, where he majored in Business Administration, Major Cowan was employed by the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, Youngstown, Ohio, until he entered the Army at Fort Sam Houston, TX in January 1941. After completing his Infantry training at that fort, he was assigned to an Infantry division.
A year later, in June 1942, when he was selected t attend the Officer Candidate School of the Finance Department at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN, he had risen to the grade of Staff Sergeant. On being commissioned a Second Lieutenant in July 1942, he was appointed to the staff of the Army Finance School at Duke University.
After almost a year and a half of teaching, he left the United States in January 1944 for overseas service in New Caledonia. On arriving at that sub-tropical base, he was assigned to the Finance Section of the New Caledonia Island Command. As the officer in charge of the administration of the office, he is responsible for its efficient administration.
