Willard J. Evert

Sergeant Willard J. Evert arrived on the 400, Thursday evening, to spend a three-day leave with his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Evert, Altoona. His arrival was a surprise to his family because his whereabouts had been unknown since he left Hamilton Field, CA the early part of January. He returned on Saturday to resume his duties as Chief Section Inspector in the Intelligence Division. His mother accompanied him to Chicago. From there, he went to Washington, DC and will soon leave for foreign service.

Sergeant Willard J. Evert has arrived somewhere in North Africa, according to word received by is wife, the former Lorraine Anderson of 1012 First Avenue, this city.

Sergeant Evert, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.J. Evert, Altoona, graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1942 and entered the service on April 9, 1943. He received his first training at Camp Kearns, UT; then was sent to intelligence school in Salt Lake City, from which he graduated with high honors. Sergeant Evert also trained at Hammer and Hamilton Fields in California.

Sergeant Evert is with the heavy bombardment group and has been appointed section chief of his squadron.

Sergeant Willard J. Evert has been transferred from North Africa to Italy, according to word just received by his wife and son, who live here. Sergeant Evert is in the Military Intelligence Division of the Army Air Corps.

Staff Sergeant Willard J. Evert has been awarded the Presidential Citation for exceptionally meritorious achievement in direct support of combat crews. He has also been awarded the Air Medal.

Staff Sergeant Evert has been serving with the Military Intelligence Division of the Fifteenth Air Force, stationed somewhere in Italy for the past 10 months.

His wife resides at 1007 South Barstow Street.

Staff Sergeant Willard J. Evert is vocal soloist on an Army Air Forces radio program in Italy. Staff Sergeant Evert sings on the air every Monday evening from 10:15 to 10:30 on the program called, Vapor Trails and the Liberators. An orchestra composed of men from the 764th Squadron is also featured on the program.

Staff Sergeant Evert has been overseas since February 28, 1944, serving with the 764th heavy bomb squadron in Italy.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F.J. Evert of Altoona. His wife and son reside at 1007 1/2 Pershing Street.
