Hold Memorial Service Sunday at Gilmanton

MONDOVI, WIóMemorial services for Dewey Gunderson, Pharmacist Mate First Class, will be held Sunday at 2 pm at the Gilmanton Lutheran Church, the Reverend Walter Huebner officiating. He was killed in action on March 4 in the battle for Iwo Jima.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. James Gunderson, town of Dover, was born April 9, 1922 at Gilmanton. He was graduated from Gilmanton High School in the Class of 1939, spent two years in the CCC camp at Nelson, and entered service in the Navy at Great Lakes in September 1942. 

He received his boot training and was graduated from the Hospital Corps School on December 23, 1942. Then he was sent to Norfolk, VA and Bainbridge, MD for more schooling and work in hospitals. 

In September 1943, Dewey was transferred to the Marines and sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for more training. 

He was sent overseas in March 1944 with the Fourth Marine Division and took part in the battles on Saipan, Tinian, and finally Iwo Jima. His division was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their work on Saipan.

Dewey is survived by his parents; his sister, Valorie Gunderson, of Washington, DC; his brother, Donald; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Gunderson of Gilmanton; and his grandfather, Robert Davis of La Crosse.
