Seven girls who enlisted in the WAVES from this vicinity, including five from Eau Claire, have just completed their basic training and indoctrination course at the Naval Training School for Women’s Reserves at Hunter College, New York City and have been assigned to duty or have been selected for advanced training. They now have the rating of Seaman Second Class.
Berdella Sather, daughter of Mrs. Tena G. Sather, 701 ½ Kendall Street, has received orders to report at the Yeoman’s School at Cedar Falls, IA. A graduate of Mondovi High School, she was employed as a stenographer at the Eau Claire Ordnance Plant before entering the service. She has three brothers in the service, one in the Navy; two in the Army Air Corps. One of them has just arrived in England and another has been in North Africa since August 1942.
Winifred Johanna Kildahl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Kildahl, 540 Putnam Street, has been sent for further instruction to the Naval Training School at Sampson, NY. She is a graduate of the Eau Claire High School and attended St. Olaf’s College.
Elaine Donna Vefald, daughter of Elmer T. Vefald, 1503 Badger Avenue, has been sent for Yeoman training to the Naval Training School at Oklahoma A & M College, Stillwater, OK. She had attended Eau Claire State Teachers College and the University of Minnesota.
Dorothy Mae Fethke, daughter of J. W. Fethke, 205 Mead Street, has been sent for further instruction to the Naval Training School at Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, GA. She was formerly assistant organist in the Epiphany Lutheran Church here. She had attended Macalester College and the MacPhail School of Music. She was employed as a comptometer operator by the U.S. Rubber Company here before enlisting.
Virginia Mary Hagg, daughter of Mrs. Ethel Towne, 308 Wisconsin Street, has been assigned as a gunnery instructor at the Naval Training School at Pensacola, FL. She was an inspector at the Eau Claire Ordnance Plant before enlisting. Her husband, Sergeant Henry J. Hagg, is now serving overseas. Her sister, also in the WAVES, is attending Storekeeper’s School in Georgia.
Leona Adeline Felton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adelbert Felton, Route 1, Strum, has been assigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Oakland, CA. She is a graduate of the Osseo High School and was a machine operator at the Eau Claire Ordnance Plant before enlisting in the WAVES. She has a brother who is a Private First Class in the Army.
Marjorie L. Welke, daughter of Mrs. Johanna Welke of Eleva, has been assigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Bethesda, MD. She is a graduate of the Whitehall Memorial High School and the School of Cosmetic Arts, Eau Claire.
