David L. Halverson

David L. Halverson, 22, of 301 Knapp Street, Menomonie, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Halverson, a ball turret gunner with the 15th Air Force in Italy, has been promoted to Staff Sergeant. He is a graduate of Menomonie High School and was a student at St. Olaf College when he entered the service.

Gunner Completes 35 Bomb Missions
15TH AAF in Italy —Staff Sergeant David L. Halverson, 22, the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Halverson of 302 Knapp Street, Menomonie, WI, recently flew his 35th long-range combat mission as ball turret gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations with the 416th Squadron of the veteran 99th Bombardment Group.

Sergeant Halverson began his combat flying in the 15th Air Force with an attack on an important oil refinery at Regensburg, Germany. He has bombed other targets in Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Poland, and Hungary.

The Sergeant has been awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and also wears the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Battle Stars. On his 35th mission, he participated in an attack on the road bridge at Alberado, Italy in support of the ground troops. 

The Sergeant is a graduate of Menomonie High School and attended St. Olaf College, before entering the Army on February 26, l943. He received his gunner's wings at the Army Air Forces Gunnery School at Kingman, AZ on May 13, 1944.
