Owain John Hughes, Jr., 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Owain J. Hughes, 420 Summit Avenue, is one of 16 Wisconsin men who have arrived at the Army Air Forces Navigation School, San Marcos, Texas for training in advanced navigation. Commissions or appointments as flight officers and navigator wings will be awarded to cadet members of the class, upon completion of the 18-week course.

Owain J. Hughes, son of Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs. Owain J. Hughes, 420 Summit Avenue, was among the several hundred aerial navigators graduated July 31 from the San Marcos, TX Army Air Field, commissioned Second Lieutenant, and awarded silver wings of a navigator.
Lieutenant Hughes entered the service in June 1943 and received his training at Sheppard Field, TX; Caldwell, ID; Santa Ana, CA; and San Marcos, TX.
Prior to entering the service, he was a student at Eau Claire Teachers College. After spending an 18-day leave here, Lieutenant Hughes will report to the Lincoln, NE Air Base.
His father, Lieutenant Colonel Owain Hughes, is now stationed in India with the Army Engineers. He previously served in Alaska.
Lieutenant Owain J. Hughes, Jr., soon will complete his training at the combat crew training station, Sioux City, Iowa and be ready to go overseas. Lieutenant Hughes, a navigator in a heavy bomb crew, is the son of Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs. O. J. Hughes, 420 Summit Avenue. He entered the service on June 25, 1943.
The promotion of Owain J. Hughes, Jr., 20-year-old navigator on an Eighth Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress, from the rank of Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant has been announced by Colonel Nicholas T. Perkins of San Antonio, TX, Commanding Officer of the 94th Bomb Group in England. Lieutenant Hughes is the son of Mrs. Marjorie B. Hughes of 420 Summit Avenue. He was a student, before enlisting in the Army Air Forces.
