|Son of Former Eau Claire Man Dies in Action|
|The following from the Manawa (WI) Advocate is of
interest locally, in that F. X. Hurley of Green Bay, father of Corporal
Eugene Hurley, whose death in battle in New Guinea is mentioned,
formerly lived in Eau Claire and had many friends here. He is also a
relative of M. B. O'Brien, Second Avenue.
The text of the story follows in part:
"Word has been received here of the death of Corporal Eugene Hurley, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. X. Hurley of Green Bay and nephew of Mr. and Mrs. George Krautkramer of this place. Serving with the U.S. Army in New Guinea, the young man met his death in one of the big battles in that area on December 23. The lad had earned 200 of the 300 hours necessary to entitle him to a furlough.
"The Krautkramers received a letter from the youth, written just two days before he met his death, acknowledging the Christmas gifts sent him."
There are four Hurley families, O'Brien said, living in the neighborhood of Green Bay, and eight of their many boys in the Armed Services are serving in the Pacific War Zone, including the one reported killed in action.
