|Achievements Win Bronze Star Medal|
|WITH THE XIX CORPS in GermanyŚCorporal Alton F. Jochum of Eau Claire has been awarded the
Bronze Star Medal for heroic
achievement in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany, it has been
announced by Headquarters, XIX Corps in Germany. Jochum is with the
963rd Field Artillery Battalion of the Corps.
The citation accompanying the medal read, in part, as follows:
"Corporal Jochum, as Scout Corporal in the forward observation party of his unit, has aided in the establishing and maintenance of forward observation posts under adverse conditions. Frequently, under intense enemy small arms and artillery fire, Corporal Jochum has placed himself in exposed positions to better observe and report enemy activities. By his courage, energetic devotion to duty, and utter disregard for personal. safety, Corporal Jochum has aided his section to accomplish, promptly and in an outstanding manner, a large volume of important work, reflecting great credit upon himself and upon the Military Service."
Jochum is a native of Eau Claire and a graduate of the Eau Claire High School, Class of 1937.
He entered the service in January 1942 and has been serving overseas since March 1944.
He is the son of William Jochum of 211 Vine Street.
