Hobart E. Knowlton

Eau Claire Boy Helped Capture Gilbert Islands
Mr. and Mrs. O. Roy Garton, 536 Germania Street, have received word from their son, Private First Class Donald Garton, that he took part in the successful invasion of the Gilbert Islands and is safe and well.

Donald enlisted in the Marines, here, on December 15, 1941, and this was his third Christmas away from home. A friend, Hobart Knowlton, is with him, he writes, but Charles Peak, who enlisted with him, was recently discharged because of an infection that developed in the South Pacific jungles.

Donald took part in the battle of Guadalcanal in addition to the seizure of the Gilberts from the Japs.

He reports that Christmas boxes arrived okay and were very welcome. All the boys want mail more than anything else he states.
