James Krahn Is Nose Gunner on Flying Fortress
AN EIGHTH AIR FORCE BOMBER STATION, England--The promotion of James E. Krahn, 21, of Eau Claire, WI from the grade of Corporal to Sergeant has been announced by Colonel Frank P. Bostrom of Bangor, Maine, Commanding Officer of the 490th Bomb Group, a B-17 Flying Fortress unit of the Eighth Air Force, with which Sergeant Krahn is a nose turret gunner.

Sergeant Krahn is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Krahn of 1211 Barland Street and, prior to entering the Army Air Forces in December 1943, was employed as a tool and die maker for the National Pressure Cooker Company in Eau Claire.


AWARDED AIR MEDAL
Staff Sergeant James E. Krahn, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Krahn, 1211 Barland Street, has been awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement on bombing attacks against German targets.

He is a member of the 490th Bomb Group, which operates Flying Fortresses in the Eighth Air Force from an English base. He was recently promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant.

AN EIGHTH AIR FORCE BOMBER STATION, England--Staff Sergeant James E. Krahn, 22, of Eau Claire, WI has been awarded the second Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal, equivalent to the third award of the medal, for "meritorious achievement," while taking part in the recent Eighth Air Force bombing attacks on Nazi air fields and railroad marshalling yards, in co-ordination with the tank and infantry thrusts at the heart of the crumbling Third Reich.

The airman displayed "courage, coolness, and skill," while serving as a ball turret gunner with the 490th Bomb Group, a B-17 Flying Fortress unit of the Eighth Air Force.

Sergeant Krahn is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Krahn of 1211 Barland Street and, prior to entering the Army Air Forces in December 1943, was employed by the National Pressure Cooker Company.
