John A. Mattice

A new recruit at the United States Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, IL is John A. Mattice, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Mattice, 1608 Woodland Avenue. Donald Lester LeGare, Route 2, Colfax, enlisted in the Navy at the recruiting office in Milwaukee on January 15.

John A. Mattice, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Mattice, 1608 Woodland Avenue, was recently graduated from the Naval Air Technical Training Center at Norman, OK and is awaiting active duty orders either to sea or to a naval base.

Gets Award of Purple Heart
Staff Sergeant Arlo Mattice, who is somewhere in Germany, has been awarded the Purple Heart for a shrapnel wound received on December 11 and the Bronze Star for bravery. He brought out a badly wounded soldier from under machine gun fire.

Staff Sergeant Mattice entered the service in July 1941 and has been overseas since October 1944.

His wife, Elaine, and daughter reside at 616 1/2 Bellinger Street. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Mattice, 1608 Woodland Avenue.

Sergeant Mattice also has two brothers in the service, Petty Officer Second Class Gordon Mattice, who is with the Navy Seabees in Saipan, and John Mattice, Seaman First Class, aerial gunner in the Navy Air Corps, who is stationed in Oregon.
