Kenneth E. Merrill

Promoted to Major at Italian Service Squadron Air Base
KENNETH MERRILL 
Kenneth E. Merrill was promoted to the grade of Major, during July, at his base in Italy, where he is in command of an Air Service Squadron. 

Major Merrill was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Reserve Corps in June 1938; later enlisting in the regular Army. He received his training at Chanute Field, IL; Lowry Field, Denver, CO; and Hamilton Field, CA. He was a weather forecaster at the airport at Fort Douglas, Utah and at the Salt Lake City Army Air Base.

In July 1941, he was sent to Gowan Field, Boise, Idaho; and then to Pendleton, OR, where he was promoted to First Lieutenant and later to Captain. 

Major Merrill was sent to England in September 1942 and in November, landed with the first contingent in North Africa. Following the African Campaign, he participated in the Sicilian and Italian Campaigns. He has been in charge of an Air Service Squadron since his arrival in England.

A graduate of Eau Claire High School, he attended Eau Claire State Teachers College. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Merrill of Owen, formerly lived in Eau Claire. He married Miss Rosalie Schoeber of Salt Lake City, Utah in February 1941.

Major Merrill has two brothers in the service. Lieutenant Colonel E. D. Merrill is stationed in Panama and Technician Fourth Grade Thomas P. Merrill is with the "Y" forces in China.
