Patricia Mertes Enlists in SPARS
Miss Patricia Mertes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Mertes, 1544 Bellevue Avenue, has enlisted in the SPARS, the women's branch of the Coast Guard. She will leave on June 28 to take her basic training at Palm Beach, FL. Miss Mertes has been very active in the USO [United Service Organization] Club here; also in the Catholic Junior League.

Special guest at the local USO this weekend was Patricia Mertes, Yeoman Third Class of the SPARs, who is home on leave after being graduated from the Yeoman School at Palm Beach, FL. She is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Mertes, 1544 Bellevue Avenue.

Yeoman Mertes, who was formerly a senior hostess at the USO here and one of the originators of the Service Men's Center in Eau Claire, entertained the present hostesses with her account of her training and life as a SPAR, Women's Reserve of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Contributions received this week at the club included cakes from Miss Marie Christianson, Mrs. Marie McFaul and Miss Julia Otrin; cookies from Mrs. L.E. Larson of the PEO Sisterhood, doughnuts from Mrs. Frank Friedeck of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and cupcakes from Mrs. H.C. Anderson of the Eau Claire War Women's Club.

Hostesses for the weekend were Misses Jane and Catherine McFaul.
