Private Donald Mertinke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mertinke, Route 1, Eleva, is serving in France, according to word received by his parents.
In letters home, he writes: "My fingers are so cold and stiff I can hardly write.
"The other night a few German planes came over, but the ack ack guns drove them off. They were the first planes that we have seen.
"You have no idea how hard it is to get cigarettes over here. Please send me two or three cartons as soon as you can. I can sell them for $15 or $20 a carton, but I need them for myself. I haven't had any for a week and can't buy, them.
"By the way, the weather is not so good over here, rains all the time and it is really cold. I'll really be a happy man when I get back in the States, because there's nothing like home."
